Understanding Hypothesis Testing
Hypothesis testing is a crucial procedure in statistics to determine whether there is enough evidence to reject a null hypothesis in favor of an alternative hypothesis. The null hypothesis is a statement of no effect or no difference, while the alternative hypothesis is what we are trying to find evidence for. We calculate a test statistic from sample data and then find the p-value, which is the probability of observing a test statistic as extreme as, or more extreme than, the one calculated, assuming the null hypothesis is true. A small p-value (typically less than the significance level, α) suggests that the observed data is unlikely under the null hypothesis, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis.
