Perimeter vs Area: What’s the Difference? (With Diagrams & Examples)

While both perimeter and area measure properties of 2D geometric shapes, they measure completely different dimensions.

Perimeter is the total linear distance around the outer boundary or edge of a closed 2D shape. It is measured in linear units (inches, feet, meters, cm).

Example (Fence around a garden): Rectangle width = 5m, length = 10m → Perimeter = 2(5 + 10) = 30 meters.

Area is the total amount of 2D space enclosed inside the boundary. It is measured in square units (sq ft, m², cm²).

Example (Grass inside the garden): Rectangle width = 5m, length = 10m → Area = 5 × 10 = 50 m².
